FINLAND HAD BEEN A PROVINCE OF THE KINGDOM OF SWEDEN AND A GRAND PRINCIPALITY OF THE SOVEREIGN OF SWEDEN SINCE 1581, THOUGH TERRITORY CHANGED HANDS WITH RUSSIA IN SEVERAL CONFLICTS.

IN 1809, RUSSIA DEFEATED SWEDEN IN THE FINNISH WAR AND BY THE TERMS OF THE PEACE TREATY OF FREDERIKSHAMN, FINLAND SWORE ALLIEGANCE TO THE CZAR, WAS ACCORDED THE STATUS OF AN AUTONOMOUS GRAND PRINCIPALITY WITHIN THE EMPIRE OF RUSSIA (WHICH ITSELF WAS AN AUTOCRACY), AND THE FINNS WERE GUARANTEED FREEDOM OF RELIGION AND OTHER LIBERTIES UNDER THE LAW.

THE GRAND PRINCIPALITY OF FINLAND (GRAND DUCHY IS SOMETIMES INCORRECTLY APPLIED) CAME TO AN END WITH THE FALL OF THE CZAR IN 1917.
