MARSHAL JOSIP BROZ TITO (1892-1980), YUGOSLAV COMMUNIST REVOLUTIONARY LEADER AND POLITICIAN, WAS MARSHAL OF YUGOSLAVIA FROM 1943 TO 1980 AND AUTHORITARIAN PRIME MINISTER (1943-1963) AND THEN PRESIDENT (1953-1980) OF YUGOSLAVIA. HE WAS A POPULAR LEADER WITH HIS OWN PEOPLE, AND IN OTHER COUNTRIES, AND IS REGARDED AS HAVING BEEN A UNIFYING SYMBOL OF THE FORMER YUGOSLAV FEDERATION.

ALTHOUGH HIS REGIME HAS BEEN CALLED "HIGHLY CENTRALIZED AND OPPRESSIVE", TITO IS REGARDED BY MANY AS HAVING BEEN “A BENEVOLENT DICTATOR”.

TITO BECAME ILL IN 1979, AND THREE DAYS AFTER A LEG AMPUTATION HE DIES OF GANGRENE. HIS FUNERAL WAS THE LARGEST STATE FUNERAL IN HISTORY UP TO THAT TIME.

DURING WWII, THE YUGOSLAV PARTISANS (or NATIONAL LIBERATION ARMY and PARTISAN DETACHMENTS OF YUGOSLAVIA), CONSIDERED THE MOST EFFECTIVE RESISTANCE MOVEMENT IN OCCUPIED EUROPE, FOUGHT THE AXIS POWERS AS THE COMMUNIST-LED RESISTANCE, COMMANDED BY MARSHAL TITO AGAINST NAZI GERMAN OCCUPATION.

IN 1943, THE TOWN OF JAJCE, WHICH HAD BEEN RECENTLY LIBERATED BY THE PARTISANS, HOSTED THE SECOND SESSION OF THE ANTI-FASCIST COUNCIL OF NATIONAL LIBERATION OF YUGOSLAVIA or AVNOJ. THE COUNCIL WAS FORMED TO HELP ADMINISTER TERRITORIES UNDER PARTISAN CONTROL. THE CONFERENCE ESTABLISHED DEMOCRATIC FEDERAL YUGOSLAVIA (DFY) ON NOVEMBER 29th, AND REPRESENTED FIVE NATIONALITIES, CROATIA, SERBIA, MONTENEGRO, MACEDONIA AND SLOVENIA. IN 1945, THE STATE WAS RENAMED THE FEDERAL PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF YUGOSLAVIA, AND IN 1963 IT WAS RENAMED THE SOCIALIST FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF YOGOSLAVIA. AT THAT TIME, INSTEAD OF FIVE NATIONS REPRESENTED, NOW THEIR WERE SIX, WHICH THEN INCLUDED BOSNIA. A SIXTH TORCH WAS ALSO ADDED TO THE NATIONAL EMBLEM.
