THE CHEETAH (ACINONYX JUBATUS) STALKS ITS PREY AT A DISTANCE AND THEN DASHES AT SPEEDS UP TO 110 KM PER MILE TO STRIKE. IT HAS LONG BEEN CALLED THE FASTEST LAND ANIMAL ON EARTH. THE CHEETAH IS ON THE INTERNATIONAL UNION FOR CONSERVATION OF NATURE VULNERABLE SPECIESS LIST, WITH THE AFRICAN SUBSPECIES LISTED AS THREATENED AND THE ASIATIC SUBSPECIES LISTED AS IN CRITICAL SITUATION. IT IS THOUGHT THAT 12,400 CHEETAHS REMAIN IN THE WILD, SPREAD ACROSS 25 AFRICAN COUNTRIES, AND ONLY 50-60 ASIATIC CHEETAHS ARE BELIEVED TO REMAIN IN THE IRANIAN WILDERNESS.
