ELIZABETH II BECAME QUEEN UPON THE DEATH OF HER FATHER, GEORGE VI, ON FEBRUARY 6, 1952. THIS COIN COMMEMORATES THE 40th ANNIVERSARY OF HER CORONATION, WHICH WAS HELD ON THE 2nd OF JUNE, 1953. IN A SPEECH MARKING THE 40th JUBLIEE OF HER REIGN IN 1992, SHE CALLED IT THE “ANNUS HORRIBILIS” OR HORRIBLE YEAR.THERE HAD BEEN REPUBLICAN OUTCRIES CONDEMNING HER PERSONAL WEALTH, THE FIGURES OF WHICH THE PALACE SAID WERE GREATLY EXAGERATED, THE ROYAL FAMILY WAS PLAGUED BY SCANDALS OF AFFAIRS AND ROCKY MARRIAGES, INCLUDING THE SEPARATION OF PRINCE CHARLES AND PRINCESS DIANA LATE IN THE YEAR, THE DIVORCE OF PRINCE ANDREW FROM SARAH FERGUSON, AND THE DIVORCE OF PRINCESS ANNE FROM MARK PHILLIPS. ADDITIONALLY, A MAJOR FIRE BROKE OUT AT WINDSOR CASTLE, AND ON A STATE VISIT TO GERMANY DEMONSTRATORS THREW EGGS AT HER. THE HORRIBLE YEAR PASSED, AND SO DID MANY TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS. THROUGH ALL OBSTACLES, CHANGES AND DISSAPPOINTMENTS, THE QUEEN HAS REMAINED A STAUNCH AND INDEFATIGABLE SYMBOL OF THE MONARCHY, AND SHE IS ARGUABLY AS POPULAR NOW AS SHE WAS WHEN SHE ASCENDED THE THRONE. SHE IS THE LONGEST REIGNING AND LONGEST-LIVED BRITISH MONARCH IN HISTORY.

THE OBVERSE OF THIS COIN BEARS THE HEAD AND SHOULDERS PORTRAIT OF A 25 YEAR OLD QUEEN ELIZABETH FROM HER 1953 COINAGE EFFIGY BY MARY GILLICK. THE DIFFERENT SWORDS AND SCEPTERS DIVIDING THE ENCIRCLING MOUNTED TRUMPETERS WERE ALL USED IN THE CORONATION CEREMONY.

THE REVERSE LEGEND, “FAITH AND TRUTH SHALL I BEAR UNTO YOU”, IS AN EXCERPT FROM THE CORONATION CEREMONY, AND SPOKEN AS PART OF THE HOMAGE OF THE ARCHBISHOP, PRINCES AND PEERS OF THE REALM AS THEY SWEAR A SOLEMN OATH OF FEALTY TO THE SOVEREIGN.

ALSO ON THE REVERSE IS DEPICTED ST. EDWARD’S CROWN, NAMED FOR EDWARD THE CONFESSOR, AND HAS BEEN USED TO CROWN ENGLISH AND BRITISH MONARCHS SINCE THE 13th CENTURY. IN ITS PRESENT FORM, CREATED FOR CHARLES II IN 1661, IT IS 12” TALL, WEIGHS 4.9 LBS., IS MADE OF 22 KARAT GOLD AND HAS 444 PRECIOUS AND SEMI-PRECIOUS STONES. AFTER THE CORONATION OF WILLIAM III AND MARY II, IT WAS NOT USED TO CROWN A MONARCH UNTIL GOEORGE V IN 1911.
