NAPOLÉON BONAPARTE (1769-1821) ESTABLISHED HIMSELF AS A MILITARY AND POLITICAL LEADER IN THE LATTER DAYS OF THE FRENCH REVOLUTION, DURING THE FRENCH FIRST REPUBLIC.

HE WOULD LEAD THE FRENCH ARMY THROUGH SEVERAL SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGNS AGAINST THE ALLIED ENEMIES OF REVOLUTIONARY FRANCE, AND IN 1799, STAGED A COUP D'ÉTAT ESTABLISHING HIMSELF AS FIRST CONSUL OF FRANCE.

IN 1804, NAPOLEON PROCLAIMED HIMSELF EMPEROR, AND HIS MILITARY GENIUS LED TO FRENCH HEGEMONY OF MOST OF THE CONTINENT OF EUROPE. HIS SUCCESSES IN HIS CAMPAIGNS, NOW CALLED THE NAPOLEONIC WARS, FOUGHT AGAINST THE ALLIED COALITIONS THAT WERE FORMED BY THE OTHER MAJOR EUROPEAN POWERS, AND ENSURED NAPOLEON WITH THE DISTINCTION OF BEING HELD AS ONE OF HISTORY'S GREATEST MILITARY MINDS. HIS STRATEGIES AND TACTICS ARE STILL STUDIED AT MILITARY ACADEMIES THROUGHOUT THE WORLD.

NAPOLEON SOUNDLY DEFEATED FIVE OUT OF SEVEN COALITIONS. NAPOLEON'S FATEFUL AND DISASTROUS INVASION OF RUSSIA  IN 1812 WOULD MARK THE BEGINNING OF THE EMPEROR'S DOWNFALL, AND THE SIXTH COALITION FORCED HIM INTO EXILE ON THE ISLE OF ELBA IN 1814.

HE ESCAPED HIS CONFINES ON ELBA TO RULE AGAIN FOR 100 DAYS IN 1815. THE SEVENTH ALLIED COALITION BROUGHT ABOUT HIS FINAL DEFEAT AT THE BATTLE OF WATERLOO. THAT DEFEAT SENT HIM TO HIS FINAL EXILE ON ST. HELENA, A REMOTE ISLAND IN THE SOUTH ATLANIC, HEAVILY GUARDED BY FORCES OF THE BRITISH ARMY AND NAVY.

THE EMIRATE OF SHARJAH HAS BEEN HISTORICALLY ONE OF THE WEALTHIEST CITY-STATES IN THE PERSIAN GULF. THE RULING DYNASTY CAME TO POWER IN 1727, AND BECAME A BRITISH PROTECTORATE IN 1820 TO REMAIN FREE FROM OTTOMAN DOMINATION. IT RECEIVED THE STATUS OF A SALUTE STATE, OR PRINCELY STATE FROM THE BRITISH DUE TO ITS IMPORTANCE OF ITS LOCATION ALONG THE MARITIME TRADE ROUTE TO INDIA. IN 1965, SHEIKH SAQR bin SULTAN WAS REMOVED AS EMIR BY BRITISH FORCES AND REPLACED BY HIS COUSIN AND BROTHER-IN-LAW KHALID bin MOHAMMED AL QASIMI. A YEAR AFTER THE MINTING OF THIS COIN, SHEIK KHALID JOINED SHARJAH TO THE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES, OF WHICH SHARJAH IS STILL A PART. IN 1972, THE FORMER RULER, SHEIKH SAQR, STAGED A BLOODY LEFTIST COUP AND ASSASSINATED SHEIKH KHALID. THE COUP FAILED AND KHALID'S BROTHER, SHEIK SULTAN III, HAS RULED EVER SINCE.
