THE LONDON AND NORTHEAST RAILWAY (LNER) CLASS A4 4-6-2 PACIFIC STEAM LOCOMOTIVE 4468 MALLARD WAS BUILT IN DONCASTER ENGLAND IN 1938. DESIGNED BY SIR NIGEL GRESLEY, THIS LOCOMOTIVE HOLDS THE WORLD SPEED RECORD FOR ALL STEAM LOCOMOTIVES RECORDED AT 126 MILES PER HOUR.

ITS DESIGN WAS AERODYNAMIC AND WIND-TUNNEL TESTED, AN EXPRESS HIGH POWER LOCOMOTIVE OF 70 FEET IN LENGTH WITH TENDER AND 165 TONS.

IT BEAT THE 1936 GERMAN LOCOMOTIVE SPEED RECORD OF 124 MILES PER HOUR, AT THE DOWNWARD GRADE OF STOKE BANK SOUTH OF GRANTHAM, ENGLAND, ON THE EAST COAST MAIN LINE IN 1938.

THE MALLARD WAS RETIRED FROM SERVICE IN 1963, BUT WAS RESTORED TO WORKING ORDER IN THE 1980's AND IS PART OF THE NATIONAL COLLECTION AT THE NATIONAL RAILWAY MUSEUM IN YORK, UK.

THIS ISSUE COINCIDED WITH THE 200th ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST LOCOMOTIVE TO RUN ON RAILS.
