THE COMMON WOMBAT (VOMBATUS URSINUS), ALSO KNOWN AS THE BARE-NOSED, NAKED-NOSED, OR COARSE-HAIRED WOMBAT, IS A MARSUPIAL INDIGENOUS TO THE COOLER, WATERED PARTS OF SOUTHERN AND EASTERN AUSTRALIA AND TASMANIA.THE SPECIES IS ALSO FOUND IN THE MOUNTAINS NORTH AND SOUTH OF QUEENSLAND, WITH DECLINING POPULATIONS IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA AND WESTERN VICTORIA. IT IS ONE OF THREE EXTANT SPECIES OF WOMBATS. THE COMMON WOMBAT GROWS TO AN AVERAGE OF 39 INCHES LONG AND WEIGHING ON AVERAGE 57 LB.

COMMON WOMBATS ARE STURDY, MUSCULAR QUADRUPEDAL CREATURES, BUILT CLOSE TO THE GROUND WITH SHORT LEGS, AND HAVING A SHORT STUBBY TAIL.

THEY ARE A SOLITARY, TERRITORIAL SPECIES, WITH EACH WOMBAT HAVING A SET RANGE IN WHICH IT HABITATES AND FEEDS. WITHIN THIS RANGE, THEY DIG A TUNNEL SYSTEM, RANGING FROM 6 TO 65 FEET IN LENGTH, WITH MULTIPLE SIDE TUNNELS. THEY ARE THE WORLD’S LARGEST BURROWING ANIMAL. UNLESS THEIR BURROW IS DESTROYED, OR THE WOMBATS ARE FORCED OUT, THEY NORMALLY LIVE IN THE SAME BURROW FOR THEIR WHOLE LIFETIME.

THE COMMON WOMBAT IS HERBIVOROUS AND FORAGES FOR FOOD MOSTLY AT NIGHT. IT IS THE ONLY MARSUPIAL TO HAVE CONSTANTLY GROWING TEETH, WHICH HELPS TO MAINTAIN A DIET OF NATIVE GRASSES AND OTHER PLANTS.

WOMBATS LIVE ABOUT 11-15 YEARS IN THE WILD, AND AROUND 20 OR MORE YEARS IN CAPTIVITY.
