THE LOUISIANA PURCHASE EXPOSITION, THE INTERNATIONAL FAIR HELD IN ST. LOUIS IN 1904, CELEBRATED THE CENTENNIAL OF THE LOUSIANA PURCHASE. THE PURCHASE (MADE IN 1804), WAS FOR THE CLAIM, NOT THE LAND ITSELF, THAT FRANCE HELD OVER THE MID-WESTERN TERRITORIES OF THE NORTH AMERICAN CONTINENT. THE CLAIMS WERE PURCHASED FROM THE EMPEROR NAPOLEON BY PRESIDENT THOMAS JEFFERSON FOR A TOTAL SUM OF 15 MILLION DOLLARS, AND PAVED THE WAY FOR AMERICAN EXPLORATION, PURCHASE AND CONQUEST OF THE WEST.

THE U.S GOVERNMENT AND 43 OUT OF 45 STATES TOOK PART IN THE EXPOSITION OF 1904, AS WELL AS EXHIBITIONS BY 62 OTHER NATIONS.

NEARLY 20 MILLION PEOPLE VISITED THE GRAND NEOCLASSICAL ST. LOUIS EXPOSITION, AND THE FAIR GROUNDS ALSO HOSTED THE 1904 SUMMER OLYMPIC GAMES.
